During the recent week in Monrovia, three residential security related incidents were reported involving UN personnel. One burglary occurred in Sinkor and two along the UN Drive area – one was an attempted burglary and the other was a burglary. UN Security Investigators notice certain similar circumstances in UN Drive cases – method of entry, items targeted, sleeping or disappearing residential security guards on duty. To reduce your potential risk to this type of crime UN staff members and NGO’s are advised to:
1. Examine Security Bars on Window: Ensure that the bars are intact and no signs of tampering.

2. Windows: – Try to avoid leaving windows open, even if the window has bars and ensure that the window is locked or use a metal bar to block the window track. As a reminder, bars and poles are used by burglars who remain outside the residence and use the pole to “fish-out” bags/purses and even trousers from the residences.
3. High Value Items: In two incidents, the suspects seemed to know where the staff members left their laptop computers or bags. Try to avoid placing your high value items in the same exact location – randomly change where you store your valuables.
4. Guards: Randomly check on your guards on duty to ensure they are posted and not sleeping.

5. Think like a Burglar: Know the vulnerable points of entry to your accommodations – like external walls, balconies, external water pipes/or drainage, etc. Ensure that ladders and poles are secure or placed in a manner that makes it difficult to get access to. Check external walls both inside and out. Ensure that garbage, building material, or other items are not being stacked outside/or inside of the wall. Examine your razor wire.
Though Monrovia is now stable, still precaution is necessary.
