Nurul Fitri Lubis

Working in humanitarian has been her endeavor since she conducted a lecture task to design a proper house in slum area for poor people. Nurul Fitri Lubis was born on August 19th 1980 in Medan, a city which is still called as her hometown. She got her graduated from University of Sumatera Utara and started her career as humanitarian architect in 2005 by joining UNOPS (United Nations Office for Project Services) to construct UNICEF’s elementary schools in Nias island. Completing her mission with UNOPS, she joined BRR and contributed herself in developing standard design of earthquake resistant buildings. In 2007, she left Nias to continue her humanitarian career as engineer with International Organization for Migration (IOM). During her period with IOM, she was involved in many construction projects to recover Aceh post earthquake and tsunami disaster. United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) was her last assignment in Indonesia as Research Assistant. At present, she’s starting her first peacekeeping mission as UN Volunteer for MONUC (UN Mission in DR Congo) in Construction and Maintenance Unit. Photography is her interest. One problem that she’s facing in DR Congo is she can’t play with her beloved camera since the regulation that forbid people for taking photograph in public areas.

Sari Siswa Purnama

Sari studied in Economics, majoring in Accounting at North Sumatera University (USU), 1997-2002. She began her endeavor with the international humanitarian organization in October 2005 under flag of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), almost 1 year since aftermath of the massive earthquake and tsunami hit Aceh. Prior her expose with IOM, had been with the private sector companies for 3 years, all were based in Medan, her hometown. In the quest for an ideal organization, she explored each jobs from one company to another, as she began to feel that there was no chemistry between her passion and the line of work she did. That quest finally landed her at one of the nations’ leading telecommunication enterprise; Indosat. Sari’s passion serving for humanity later finally answered when later on found a chance to work at IOM not long after she joined Indosat and began to get deployed in Meulaboh, Aceh Barat as an Administrative and Finance for the Sub-Office; to support the rebuilding and reconstruction program in Aceh. Her exposure at IOM further provided her to assume the duty as Project Assistant in the health program of IOM. Armed with the extensive experience at IOM in Aceh, has given her the opportunity for an international assignment, working under MONUC (the UN Mission in the DR Congo) started from 3 December 2009 at Aviation Budget Unit. Apart from regular activities, she really loves to traveling. The assignment with the UN peacekeeping mission in the DRC (MONUC) has ever since opened the opportunity to explore the African continent, which before exist only as a dream – now that is about to come true. Sari will be sharing more stories from the DRC.

Maria Izilda Adinda

Maria Izilda Adinda started her post in UNMIT Timor Leste as Procurement on September 2009. Prefer to be called ‘Jilly’ instead of Maria (don’t ask her where Jilly came from. Not so long story, but too lazy to explain). Born in Jakarta, 26 December 1977 and grew up in pempek city Palembang till highschool and then moved out to Bandung and spent her university time at Parahyangan Catholic University majoring International Relationship. Joined the UN after Tsunami, her first UN was UNJLC Indonesia in Jakarta, the UN Joint Logistics Centre for disaster and then relocated to Banda Aceh for WFP Shipping Service until 2007 as procurement. Returned to Jakarta and last working with AusAid project as Office Administrator before Dili to join her first Peace Keeping Mission. Claimed herself as ‘a part time worker and a full time traveller’ because she loves travelling and working with UN opens opportunity for more doors to see the world. Enjoys travelling, reading and just chilling out with friends and chit chatting, loves her family and friends, soon-to-be-married (hopefully this year) with her beloved fiancé & a very easy going person.

Arny Wahyuni

Born in Semarang, on 4 may 1978, married with 1 child, Arny Wahyuni has been currently serving under Mission L’ONU en RD Congo (MONUC), the United Nations peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This role has given her the opportunity to roam around the larger-part of DR Congo (DRC). The country has been quite an expose to herself, as prior undertaking the assignment, Arny has been living in the DRC over 4 years, accompanying the spouse whose working at a private company operating in the DRC. The larger part of the country has been felt like a second home to her. Outside work, she is also an active member of UN-OV (United Nations Online Volunteer) under the umbrella of SCN (Seattle Community Network) playing the role as Indonesian translator since 2007. Arny will further share her stories from the DRC.

Surya Aslim

Surya Aslim has been working in the development field since April 2004. The Aceh Tsunami brought major change to his career. Within a fortnight, he was involved in the Tsunami humanitarian response operation at that time with British NGO Islamic Relief. His Aceh’s relief tour of duty earned him Project Manager post for Islamic Relief Bangladesh, where he managed a Disaster Risk Reduction project, funded by ECHO (European Commission’s Humanitarian Aid Office). Surya spent one year (2006-2007) in Bangladesh, mostly in Sylhet – the northeastern part of the country. Shortly after completing his Bangladesh assignment, he joined United Nations Office of the Recovery Coordinator for Aceh and Nias (UNORC), where he served as Head of Field Office for Nias and Lhokseumawe (2007-2009). His humanitarian work continues through his present assignment in Myanmar. He is now working as Recovery Coordination Liaison Officer for ASEAN Humanitarian Task Force, ensuring smooth coordination of recovery efforts in Yangon Division, Myanmar. Surya shares great interest in reading books and photography.

Whisnu Kusardianto

Recently serving at the United Nations Mission in Sudan as UN Military Observer, he is currently posted in Bor, Sudan. However, as many people said that the place named “Bor” is often associated with “bored”, he finds way to enjoy his assignment in the said place. Being married with 2 kids, he likes watching movies, reading and enjoys fine dining as well as trying out new recipes. Began with the military service since December 1997, initially drafted at the Indonesian Naval Academy as cadet for three and half years. Graduated from the Indonesian Naval Academy, he was then deployed and was handling various assignments on the deck of an Indonesian Warship. Assumed rotating responsibilities, initially as a Navigation Officer, then as a Gunnery Officer, Operational Officer, Principal Warfare Officer, and later on had became an Executive Officer. The career at the Navy, has exposed him to territorial waters as an Operational Section Officer in a Naval Station. Previous task prior undertaking the United Nations Mission assignment at UNMIS, was as an instructor at the Naval Action Speed & Tactical Training. Having to possessed on numerous years of service in the navy, Lcdr Whisnu Kusardianto has also been exposed to a naval humanitarian operation, apart from regular military missions. The most recent humanitarian mission he was assigned to was during post-tsunami disaster in Aceh Province. It is not surprising that with all the various mission accomplishments, that several merits and medals were awarded by the Indonesian Government for his loyalty and servitude. As former UN Secretary General Mr. Boutros-Boutros Gali had stated that UNMO (United Nations Military Observer) is the eye & ear of the Security Council, therefore he felt confident to accomplish his mission at the United Nations Mission in Sudan with sucess.

Joe Juferdy

Juferdy, since his appointment as Community Service under the The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugee (UNHCR) in 2005 based in Aceh, has been extensively liaising with local Non – Governmental Organization (NGOs), community leaders and local authorities on matters relating to sheltering and permanent housing programme towards the Aceh tsunami relief effort. He travelled into various remote areas to find villages and conduct the programme. Equipped with the field experience, he then continued to several other projects in collaboration with UNICEF that focused on public health. In July 2007, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) had contracted Juferdy to play a role as facilitator in their project in temporary living center decommissioning solution that further provide assessment and gathering data on temporary settlement project in Banda Aceh. With all humanitarian mission exposures he has been banking on, this has landed him to a new frontier. Presently undertaking new appointment under the United Nations’ – World Food Programme (WFP) and taking office in Kupang – Atambua, Nusa Tenggara Timur (East Nusa Tenggara), Indonesia’s province bordering the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, focusing more on assisting local nutrition centers/pediatrics health centers and schools in implementing assistance on nutrition monitoring program through various empowerment programmes aimed at the beneficiaries. Kinshasa, Aku Datang!
