Fati Balfas
Fatiah was born in Jakarta in 1982, the youngest of three siblings, and a firm believer in international justice. She took her grandfather’s last name “Balfas” in order to provide a ‘family’ name to ease her integration into the European system. She obtained her law degree from the University of Indonesia in Depok, in 2004, specializing in Public International Law including international organization, international legal proceeding, and international criminal law. In 2003 she joined Lembaga Penelitian Hukum Internasional (LPHI- Center for International Law Studies) as a Researcher and became an editor to Jurnal Hukum International Indonesia (Indonesian Journal of International Law) until 2005. She subsequently pursued a Master’s degree in International Law at Erasmus University of Rotterdam after receiving a full scholarship from the Dutch government. She started an internship at the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and subsequently was offered to join Charles Taylor’s Defense Team, Special Court for Sierra Leone on April 2007. Passionate about public International Law, she was granted a funding to allow her admission to a summer course organized by The Hague Academy of International Law in summer 2008. Currently serving as a Legal Assistant for Charles Taylor Defense Team, at the United Nations’ backed Tribunal – SCSL (Special Court for Sierra Leone) Sub-Office in The Hague, The Netherlands.
Fati enjoys living in Delft and biking throughout the city and vigorously perfecting her zero swimming skills. She encourages you to share your story through any possible means. She believes that people can always learn something from experience and other people’s experience.
